BEHIND THE DESIGN | Q + A WITH DESIGNER ROANNE ABOUT THE GREAT OUTDOORS COLLECTION

Saben welcomes new collection with a nod to nostalgia and the Great Outdoors.

This winter, amid the ever changing landscapes and vast terrain of the ‘Great Outdoors’ we bask in dappled light by day and stargaze by night.

This Autumn Winter collection is refined and sophisticated with woven textures, rich berry tones, deep navy, muted Tussock green and python print, all anchored by elemental gold chunky chains.

Big sis tilly leather woven bag celebrating new season

Designed by Roanne Jacobson, with the essentials in mind.

“Inspired by the women who wear them, our hero silhouettes take centre stage in a trans-seasonal palette, alongside an adventurous print for those in need of a sartorial update.” Jacobson says.

In late August, Roanne and the team escaped Auckland and headed for the snow capped peaks of Queenstown for their campaign shoot where they captured the latest collection nestled among the valleys, rivers and tussock covered hillsides.

It's time to explore Roanne's favourite new silhouettes and hero hues from her latest collection Great Outdoors’.

First things first...

STYLE FILES

What makes the perfect bag?

The balance of style and function. You need a bag that works as hard as you do and makes life easy whether you're dining out or wrangling  kids at the playground.

What makes the Great Outdoors collection so special?

Designing this collection was a very nostalgic process for me, having dug through the archives to unearth some of my favourite silhouettes (Willow & Chelsea) and giving them a seasonal update in our classic bubble texture.

It's not often I have time to wander down memory lane and unearth gems from the archive. With this being our 20th birthday year, it was very nostalgic.

Designing a new collection is always an exciting process, I let my instincts, rather than trends guide me and they very rarely steer me wrong.

What does your handbag wardrobe currently look like?

This season I have the Bea in classic black on high rotation. As you probably know by now, it rarely leaves my side.

Where do you wear your Bea?

Literally everywhere! She comes with my on my morning walks with the dog, into the office, to meetings and on weekends when we take the boys to basketball or meeting friends for dinner.

Favourite new silhouette - Bea

I know I'm not supposed to play favourites with the bags but this bag is mean to BEA! (See what I did there..) I've been coveting this bag since day one and now she goes with me everywhere. Big enough for my life's essentials but small enough to take from work to drinks, to walking the dog. I even doubled down and added a feature strap (for crossbody ease) and a feature handle (for over the shoulder and on the go).

Favourite mini bag - Coco

You know my obsession with Coco is never ending. Our popular silhouette (and Collab with Coco Wellington) is back for winter in an icy new hue Glacier. The perfect silvery grey to pair back with denim, darks, lights and brights.

Favourite slouchy bag - Chelsea

This is such a nostalgic silhouette for me. We brought Chelsea back from the archives (this hobo style shoulder bag was one of the first pieces I designed for Saben). With the shoulder bag renaissance in full swing, this bag does double duty as an everyday piece, baby bag or mini carry-all.

Favourite new hue - Tussock

For the eternally chic neutralist (or naturalist...); this muted Verde hue is the answer for those who want to make a statement. Bound to be the envy of others, this shade of Tussock Green is very much having a moment. My favourite silhouette of the season is Bea but our favourite family members Tilly and Big Sis got this enviable upgrade too.

Favourite new shoulder bag - Willow

The compact version of Chelsea with the same amount of sass! Willow has the usual detachable handles and the additional ease of a crossbody strap so whether you're wrangling your phone, a coffee or the kids, your hands are free for whatever life brings your way. She comes in Black and Tan which brings a warm neutrality to the layers of a dark winter wardrobe.

QUICK FIRE ROUND

Classic Black or Nautral Tan?

Classic Black. Every. Single. Time

Shoulder bag or crossbody?

Crossbody. I always wear by bag when walking the dog so it has to be crossbody

Bubble Texture or Python Print?

Bubble Texture. The Chelsea bag in Tan Bubble is a favourite this season.

Wallet or cardholder?

Definitely a wallet. I'm too much of a handbag hoarder to have just a cardholder. I'm very jealous of the minimalists among us.

‘The Great Outdoors’ collection is available from Saben bricks and mortar boutiques in Newmarket and Ponsonby and online at our digital flagship.
